Halloween

We just finished the APDA fifth annual Pumpkin decorating contest. Patients voted these two pumpkins the winners:

Then, the entire office dressed up for the kids. Yes, a typical day in a pediatric dentistry office. You never know what you might see.

By the way, "Buy back Halloween Candy" programs from dentists IMOP are basically a well intentioned gimmick. Let the kids have their candy!-just brush afterwards and avoid the really hard candies.

    LOVE your blogs!
Last week my 7-year-old, jumping on the trampoline, collided with his friend's knee, knocking out his already loose top front tooth. A decent amount of blood, gum swelling, and crying ensued. Then things were fine - bleeding stopped, pain went away, crying subsided. A few days later, as the swelling went down, I noticed a laceration in the gum, and I can see a bit of his adult tooth. The laceration causes a small sort of triangular-shaped defect extending from the gum margin. There seems to be a 3-4mm gap where the gum margin doesn't meet, extending upwards approximately 4-5mm. He has no pain, the gum isn't swollen as far as I can tell, and nothing smells bad to indicate infection. I know you haven't examined my child personally, but in your experience, do these things tend to go ahead and heal by secondary intention, or will this kind of laceration require intervention? I'm planning on calling the dentist, but I also don't want to waste his time (and my $) if I just need to be patient and wait for this thing to heal itself.
Thank you so much for your time and responses to all the posts!

  3. Most soft tissue injuries heal themselves without "intervention", that is stitches, etc. However, there may be injuries you cannot see. Still, every case is different, so I still advise seeing your pediatric dentist.

  4. Wow! That's awesome! I've never seen such good pumpkins!

You look like you have the most fun dentist's office ever!

I wish I weren't 2 hours away - I would definitely be bringing my toddler to see you!

  5. Rachel--feel free to come on up. We see patients from Tennessee to Florida-sometimes they come up for tha appointment and then go shopping, etc. We have offices in Huntsville and Madison AL, and will be opening a new office in Decatur (not quite as large/fancy) by summer. Opps, was I supposed to let that cat our of the bag yet?....
