A Blog Dedicated to Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
And Especially the Friends and Patients of Alabama Pediatric Dental Associates and Orthodontics
My daughter is dealing with enamel hypoplasia which has become obvious since her braces came off, but was present from the time her permanent teeth came in. A product, GC MI Paste Plus, was recommended to us to help restore calcium to her teeth. The paste contains calcium phosphate and sodium flouride (0.2%). Are you familiar with this type of treatment? Should we be concerned that it could in some way worsen the condition, like some whitening treatments can?
calcium phosphate and fluoride are not likley to cause problems and might even help, but you may want to read more about enamel hypoplasia and decalcification of teeth--after braces discoloration especially is often difficult to treat.
Absolutely stunning size and design of your new office. Well Done!! I'm a pediatric dentist in Brandon, MS who started a scratch solo practice 1.5 years ago and am eagerly awaiting the day that I can have an office as beautiful as yours.
Hi. My 4 year old daughter just had her back molar removed due to a cavity that was very deep and infected. The dentist had a spacer put in. It has been three days and we are having a very difficult time keeping food out of the spacer. the gum line lies lower than the edge of the spacer. I had to use the hook tool to get some food out of there. We brush her teeth after evey time she eats, but are still having difficulty keeping that area clean. Is this a common problem? and what can we do to remedy it?
Common problem especially just after placement--although extraction sites heal over in a few days the bone underneath takes about 6 weeks or so till ir remodels--so sometimes there is a ind of "hole" there that traps food. If it is a continuing problem ask your dentist to take a look.
thank you so much. I've researched all over the internet and you are the only one who's been able to answer my question. thank you for having this blog. congrats on the new office!
Hi, I just found your blog through Google and I noticed that you have previously answered questions for aspiring dentists. I'm actually going to take my DAT this May and I am so nervous about my future. I don't have a very good GPA (~3.2). I have been doing very well in my practice DATs (20+)and my grades in my science classes have drastically improved in the last few semesters, but I didn't give priority to my grades when I first started my undergrad. I am majoring in biotechnology, and I am actually going to be part of one of the first generations to graduate with this degree in my univ. since it was only approved last semester. I love biology so much, which is why I’m doing very well on my practice DATs, and I have been getting nearly perfect scores on the perceptual ability section. I am taking a Kaplan prep course so I have a lot of practice material. I have very good recommendation letters from a previous employer and science professors. I went to what has been named the best public high school in Texas, the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions. At my high school I had the opportunity to shadow dental students at UT Dental School, orthodontic residents, pediatric and general practice residents. I took a dental class where we learned how to make molds and take dental x-rays. I actually have a list of other accomplishments from high school, but I doubt they will matter in my application? I am volunteering at the Children's hospital here in the Texas Medical Center, and I am planning to volunteer at a dental clinic this summer. So I am wondering, if in your opinion, anything I have listed could possibly outnumber my low GPA? I am a senior and I am applying either this summer or the next, but I would rather begin internships in the biotechnology industry if there is no chance for me. Everyone tells me I should be fine, but I'm having a really hard time believing it.
Please read all my posts on dental school and how to become a dentist, you might find them helpful.
Do not sell yourself short. Yes, grades are very important, but a trend of improving grades is a good sign and your motivation to learn and get experience is a valuable asset. I cannot say what will happen in these competitive times, but you certainly seem the type they would be looking for to join our profession. Good Luck!!!
Nice office Dean. It may be too late to be considered but you may be interested in the children's themed wall coverings at www.wackywallscapes.com. Good luck!
I wanted to know about a product that our office was looking into selling...m i paste...will it really "heal" decalcified areas..do the white areas go away? One doctor is saying it will...just wanted another opinion...been looking on internet, but just pulls up company that sells it and their claims...thanks!
From what I can tell, it supposedly helps decalcified/demineralized areas of a tooth become stonger not necessarily look any different. I would not put too much into it without more information.
Beautifully Designed Office! If you need help in creating a fun, themed environment for the children, Bruce Barry's Wacky World Studios does some amazing work. They have outfitted my son's dentist office in FL and he just loves to get his teeth cleaned now! Check out their work at www.wackyworld.tv.
Just an update--yes, we have opened this office back in April 2009. Things have been great! See the tour video (in the sidebar)for the office once it was decorated and much of the equipment installed.
Congratulation to your new office Dr. Dean. From the way you introduced the construction, it looks like your group planned it very well. Your patients will surely love the environment when it's done.
