The Alabama Dental Assocaition Annual Meeting was this past weekend in Orange Beach Alabama. Friday the beach was beautiful. Saturday this oil washed up. The mess is obviously great. Moreover, the sand is normally some of the whitest and most beautiful (often called sugar white sand). This is very sad and aggrivating that it has come to this. One of my business partners brought back a tar ball as a depressing souvineer. There is still a lot to do there and it is still a great place to vacation. I only hope the beaches will be oil free soon.
This is how it usually looks:

Later that same day, the ADA inspected the oil laden beach and declared that its was safe and harmless just like mercury filled dental amalgams and BPA leaching resins.
This is a disaster for the feds and President Obama. Unlike Katrina, which happened on State land, this is a federal responsibilty.
We just posted another link to your blog at DentalToons.com. Thanks once again!
Actually "Katrina" (the disaster) happened on federal land - the collapse of the Army Corps of Engineers levees. Awfully sorry to see that damage on your beaches.
As of July 22, the well is partially capped and the beaches are very nice. (see my followup post). Hopefully the clean up can finish and the tourist industry rebounds. I hate to see a morotorium on gulf wells-makes no sense and we need the oil. If it's not pumped out of the gulf, it will be pumped out overseas, placed on ships, floated accross the gulf and therewill be a big fat bill to foreign nations. So, despite the recent andrare spill, lets get back on track.
tragic event. Thanks for posting the pictures
Funny how there was a ton of media coverage when it happened but really no follow up to what's happening today.
