My son just turned 4 .. I took him to a pediatrician dentistry for his first check up. He didn't do well he freaked out cried so much when they did X-rays come to find out he has two cavities and needs them filled. He needs a baby root canal (pulp cleaning) and he has a bottom back tooth that needs to be pulled due to decay. As a mom with anxiety this truly freaks me out. It just seems like so much on a 4 yr old. I will not have my son sedated but I am open to the mask or juice. Can you tell me which one has side affects? And which one would you prefer to work better.

Hi. My daugther who is 2 yrs old had 3 sessions of conscious sedation to a pediatric dentist. The first session with 1 root canal and filling seems well but has an effect of vomitting 6hrs after the procedure. Second, 'twas root canal and crowning, went well but with normal complains of pain a day after the procedure. The last one was with 1 root canal upper front tooth, 3 fillings molars and incisor and cleaning. After the last procedure, a day after it, there was swelling in one side of my daugthers face. I informed the dentist and she said it is unusual to have swelling after the procedure but gave nothing and just said to observe the swelling. Because i was so worried I went to the pediatrician 2days after the procedure since it was weekend that time and no clinic. My pediatrician gave me antibiotic to lessen the swelling. I have notice since the last procedure my baby always have colds. Colds will just go away for 1 week then came back. She is not like this before. Do you think it is the effect of the procedure and her sinus has been broke?
It is not typical, but not unheard of to have minor complications after treatment. Reactions like nausea after sedation occasionally occur. Facial swelling is not common, but is often due to a child biting their cheek or lip while numb. Obviously a child can have some problems with decay so extensive at such a young age. Other things, colds, I cannot say, but would be less likely to be connected to dental treatment.
